Oggi conosciuta in tutto il mondo per la sua bellezza, Pienza ha una storia relativamente recente.
La cittadina infatti non era altro che un piccolo borgo chiamato Corsignano fino al 1462 quando Papa Pio II decise di ricostruire il luogo che gli aveva dato i natali.

Enea Silvio Piccolomini nacque proprio a Corsignano nel 1405 e divenne papa a 53 anni con il nome di
Papa Pio II. Durante un viaggio verso Mantova l’ormai pontefice si trovò ad attraversare nuovamente il luogo in cui era nato e si stupì fortemente del degrado che trovò, tanto che decise di far ricostruire il borgo o meglio, pensò bene di far costruire una città ideale.
Il progetto venne affidato all'architetto Bernardo Rossellino.
La costruzione durò circa quattro anni e dette vita a una cittadina armoniosa, con forme tipicamente quattrocentesche, la perla del Rinascimento, a misura d'uomo, detta anche città utopia.
Da allora a oggi Pienza ha avuto pochissime modifiche ed è pressoché uguale a come la progettò Rossellino.
Nel 1996 Pienza è entrata a far parte dei Patrimoni naturali, artistici, culturali dell'UNESCO, seguita nel 2004 dalla stessa Val d'Orcia.

Today known all over the world for its beauty, Pienza has a fairly recent history. In fact, the town was nothing more than a small village called Corsignano until 1462 when Pope Pius II decided to rebuild the place that had given him birth.

Enea Silvio Piccolomini was born in Corsignano in 1405 and became pope at the age of 53 with the name of Pope Pius II. During a trip to Mantua, the now pope found himself crossing the place where he was born again and was greatly surprised by the degradation he found, so much so that he decided to have the village rebuilt or rather, he thought it best to build an ideal city. The project was entrusted to the architect Bernardo Rossellino. The construction lasted about four years and gave life to a harmonious town, with typically fifteenth-century shapes. 

Since then the city has had very few changes and is almost the same as how Rossellino designed it.

In 1996 Pienza became part of the natural, artistic and cultural heritage of UNESCO, followed in 2004 by the Val d'Orcia itself.
